We are all deeply saddened by the conflict and humanitarian crisis occurring in the Ukraine and we fully support the current Government scheme ‘Homes for Ukraine’ – to help and aid Ukrainian refugees. Homeowners across the UK now have the option to open their homes to refugees fleeing the war.
The scheme will enable individuals, charities, community groups and businesses to become known as ‘sponsors’ and volunteer accommodation and provide a route to safety for Ukrainians forced to escape their homeland. Sponsors should provide accommodation for as long as they are able to, but there is a minimum expectation of 6 months.
In light of the latest Government advice for this scheme, we wanted to advise our members of the procedure to follow regarding their existing mortgage. Any member/s looking to become a sponsor and apply to house and support a refugee in their property – can make an application on the Homes for Ukraine website – if an application is accepted, then you are requested to call our mortgage team on 01582 463 133 to advise us that you are taking part in this scheme. There is no need to contact us until you hear if an application has been accepted.
It is part of the government process that customers are requested to inform their lender – who will then take a record of the situation. If a member wishes to house a refugee using their main residence then a lodger agreement is recommended. However, if it is not within their main residence, then an Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement is required.
